Sunday Sermon by: Dr. Paul de Vries
KEY: The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchi-Zedek"
= Psalm 110:4
Melchi-Zedek is an intensely curious character briefly mentioned early in the first book of the Old Testament. All we know about him is found in just four verses, Genesis 14:18-21. In addition, Psalm 110:4 includes a pithy prophetic reference to the promised Messiah being a priest forever according to Melchi-Zedek's unique priestly "order." However, much later the author of the "Letter to the Hebrews" in the New Testament devotes 30 verses (Hebrews 5:6 and 6:20 - 7:28) to Melchi-Zedek, clearly labeling him as the primary model for Jesus' awesome ministry as our ultimate priest.
Why is Melchi-Zedek so important? Who is he and what did he do? What qualified him for this amazing exemplary role? Also, why is Melchi-Zedek so mysterious to many people? And now how can each of our own lives, service, and leadership be further empowered by examining the extraordinary model of ancient Melchi-Zedek?
In this advent season, may King David's Psalm 110 prophesy of Messiah coming as priest forever according to Melchi-Zedek's order both strengthen our faith and open us further to God's awesome, abundant grace.
